The Śmigus Dziady of Dobra: the Mystery of a Living Tradition That Has Survived the Centuries
21 April 2025 | Easter Monday | Dobra, Limanowa County, southern Poland
Authenticity, mystery and the strength of community
Authenticity, mystery and the strength of community: that is the shortest way I can describe the extraordinary spectacle I document every year in Dobra, a small town in the Lesser Poland region. The Dziady Śmigustne, or Śmigus Dziady, are much more than a colourful attraction. They are a cultural code, a ritual of purification and a living legend rooted in the hearts of the townspeople and in the history of the region. Like other traditions kept alive in the towns and villages of Lesser Poland, such as the youth firefighting sports competition in Sidzina, they bring together community, passion and the memory of local values.
An Easter ritual from the depths of the Middle Ages
On Easter Monday, something extraordinary happens in Dobra. Strange figures in straw costumes, with horns and masks, come out onto the streets. In silence, to archaic sounds, they douse passers-by with water. These are the Dziady Śmigustne, also known locally as Śmiguśnioki or Słomiaki (“straw men”).
According to local tradition, the custom dates back to the 13th century and the time of the Tatar invasions. It symbolises the coming of spring, fertility and purification. It has survived the partitions of Poland, wars and the communist era, remaining a living testimony to local identity. I had the chance to watch it up close and photograph every moment.
A ritual that speaks through silence
The silence of the Dziady creates a unique atmosphere. Young men visit homes and symbolic places, splashing passers-by with water, which according to tradition brings health and prosperity.
The costumes made of straw, the bells and the masks carry deep symbolic meaning. This is a rite of passage, linked to the renewal of nature and the cycle of life.
An identity woven into a straw costume
The Dziady Śmigustne are not folklore for show; they are a living tradition. According to available data, as many as 71% of Dobra's residents consider the ritual part of their identity. For the young participants it is not only fun but also a symbolic step into adulthood.
The Dobra Municipal Cultural Centre plays an important role in sustaining this heritage by organising workshops, competitions and educational activities. The “Śmiguśniok of the Year” award genuinely motivates young people to take part.

Summary
The Dziady Śmigustne of Dobra are not just folklore but a living tradition: a ritual of memory, community and nature. It is a phenomenon that deserves to be documented and admired. I am glad I could witness it once again, camera in hand and with full respect for this remarkable community.
