Epiphany – A Tradition Rich in Symbolism

On 6 January 2025, a solemn Holy Mass was held at the parish in Bieńkówka to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, also known as Three Kings’ Day. The event was filled with tradition, the depth of liturgy, and the joyful involvement of the entire parish community. I had the pleasure of attending this special moment and have prepared a report and a photo gallery for you.

The celebration began with a symbolic Procession of the Three Kings, which circled around the church. Children, youth, and adults all participated. The Kings – Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar – led the joyful, song-filled procession wearing crowns and robes.Procession of the Three Kings at the parish in Bieńkówka – 6 January 2025

Tradition and Community – The Heart of the Celebration

After the procession, the Holy Mass began. The parish priest reminded the faithful of the meaning of the gifts offered to the newborn Jesus by the Kings: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Parishioners received traditional sets – incense and chalk – for blessing their homes.

Following the liturgy, attendees could enjoy a costume presentation from the procession, sing carols together, and admire performances by children and parish groups. The spirit of community was felt in every moment.

Epiphany Customs and Traditions

The celebration of Epiphany in Bieńkówka is accompanied by beautiful and vibrant traditions. One of them is the blessing of chalk, which parishioners use to mark their doors with the letters “C+M+B” – meaning: Christus Mansionem Benedicat, or “May Christ bless this house.” Crowns, the Bethlehem star, and joyful singing were all present – signs of peace, joy, and unity.
